Dance till you drop at Lawn’s swingin’ bash

Maybe you want to explore some new kinds of dance, or maybe you’re in the mood for a serious workout. In either case, this weekend’s Lawn on D festivities give you the choice to build your body or shake your booty.

On Saturday, it’s one of the summer’s splashiest free events, the D Street Dance Bash, with a full day of every kind of dance imaginable, both for watching and participating. Starting at 1 p.m., there will be the U.S. debut of the Parisian “vertical dance” troupe Retouramont. The troupe’s dances take place in midair, as the dancers are suspended by a crane, or perform atop a structure of poles attached to the ground. Three dancers and two musicians are featured playing accordion and bagpipes.

From there we head to more familiar territory, as the Boston Lindy Hop group gives a swing-dance demonstration and instruction from 2-4 p.m. There’ll also be a chance to take lessons when the Alameda group does country-style line dancing from 4-6 p.m., so learn the steps and cure your achy-breaky heart.

Then Metamovements take your feet on a trip to Cuba at 6 p.m. And one of the day’s participatory peaks will hit at 8 p.m., as the Collage Dance Ensemble leads a gypsy-dance flash mob. You can learn the steps in advance (they’re posted on YouTube), then show up and join the crowd.

The dancing continues with a performance by Chien-Hwe, whose New York-based group 1000 Virtues is dedicated to the idea of “connecting to your highest expressive self” through workshops, classes and shows. The Boston hip-hop dance troupe StreetHyPe then performs an hour of urban dances starting at 9 p.m., and the day wraps up with an encore performance of aerial ballet by Retouramont.

On Sunday it’s time to move some serious muscle as the Ray Bootcamp group invites you to take part in BodybuRn, an intense 45-minute session of circuit exercises designed to “activate every muscle in your body and unleash strength you didn’t know you had.” There’ll be three sessions, at 8:15, 9:15 and 10:15 a.m., with a DJ on hand to make sure you don’t lose motivation.

The usual Lawn on D live music continues this weekend as well, with a Bonus Thursday featuring the rocking Wolfpack in the evening, and the popular party band Closing Time and DJ Oya performing on Sunday.
